Our story

Dar Dibaj is a textile and jewellery business rooted in the great craft traditions of Dār al-Islām, from the Sozni of Kashmir to the djellaba of the Maghreb, from the Aghabānī of the Levant to the Batik from the Malay Archipelago, from the suzani of Central Asia to the carpets of Greater Persia. We source and present handmade pieces made with natural materials, directly from local production and their inherited techniques, reflecting regional standards of Beauty and Majesty throughout the Islamicate world. Our focus is on forms of craft that industrial modernity and the colonial period pushed to the margins, leading to the gradual museumization of the work of our artisans. This in turn weakened not only the local economies of craftmaking, but also the aesthetic languages through which people once clothed themselves, adorned themselves, and lived with refinement, and dignity.

Our work begins from the conviction that these traditions still have a place in contemporary life. They deserve circulation, seriousness, and renewed life in our day and age. By making such crafts accessible again, we aim to celebrate these living traditions, while also making sure we help sustain the local artisans, workshops, and the families and communities where these beautiful pieces come from.
